Why we chant the Hare Krishna Maha-Mantra
by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

"This transcendental vibration, by chanting of:
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

...is the sublime method for reviving our Krishna consciousness.

As living spiritual souls we are all originally Krishna conscious entities, but due to our association with matter from time immemorial, our consciousness is now polluted by material atmosphere. In this polluted concept of life, we are all trying to exploit the resources of material nature, but actually we are becoming more and more entangled in her complexities. This illusion is called maya, or hard struggle for existence for winning over the stringent laws of material nature. This illusory struggle against the material nature can at once be stopped by revival of our Krishna consciousness.

Krishna consciousness is not an artificial imposition on the mind. This consciousness is the original energy of the living entity. When we hear the transcendental vibration, this consciousness is revived and the process is recommended by authorities for this age. By practical experience also, we can perceive that by chanting this maha-mantra, or the great chanting for deliverance, one can at once feel transcendental ecstasy from the spiritual stratum.

When one is factually on the plane of spiritual understanding, surpassing the stages of sense, mind and intelligence, one is situated on the transcendental plane. This chanting of Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare is directly enacted from the spiritual platform, surpassing all lower status of consciousness, namely sensual, mental, and intellectual."

The day after Diwali is referred to as Annakuta, or Govardhana Puja. On this day the inhabitants of Vrindavan (Lord Krishna’s abode on Earth) would hold a harvest festival in honor of King Indra, the demigod who provided the rains essential for the harvest.

One day, however, Lord Krishna wanted to teach Indra a lesson. He convinced the inhabitants of Vrindavan to honor Govardhana Hill instead, whose fertile soil provided the grass upon which the cows and bulls grazed, and to honor the cows and bulls who provided milk and ploughed the lands. Outraged, Indra retaliated with terrifying thunderstorms. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, calmly lifted Govardhana Hill with the little finger of his left hand. For seven days and seven nights the Lord held up Govardhana Hill, providing a giant umbrella to shelter the inhabitants of Vrindavan from the torrential rain. Realizing the futility of his actions, King Indra bowed down before the Lord with folded hands and offered prayers of supplication.

In this way, Lord Krishna demonstrated that He is Deva Deva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the cause of all causes!

Shri Shri Radha Krishna Temple wishes to congratulate Bhaktine Jenn on her Harinam Initiation which was held on Saturday, July 2, 2011 in the Temple with HH Bhaktimarga Swami officiating. A number of devotees traveled from Winnipeg for the initiation and for the evening drama program. Bhaktine Jenn was given the spiritual name of Jahnavi Devi Dasi. Congratulations!!

Bhakti Brhat Bhagavata Swami Visits Regina ISKCON Temple

Regina devotees were pleased to meet and hear Bhakti Brhat Bhagavata Swami on June 9th at our Temple. Bhakti Brhat Bhagavata Swami is a member of the Governing Body Commission of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness.

In 1991 he founded the Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture(BCEC) in Durban, South Africa. Under his direction(and travelling internationally since 1994, BCEC has expanded to other countries: Hong Kong, Philippines, India, Kenya, Mauritius, England, Ireland, Canada, USA, Trinidad and Guyana. Since July 1991, over 14200 students have passed through Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture.

From 1997 to 2000 he was President of Sri Sri Radha Radhanath Temple, ISKCON Durban, South Africa. Then from 2001 to 2004 he was President of Sri Sri Krishna Balarama Mandir, ISKCON Vrndavana, India.

Currently, Bhakti Brhat Bhagavata Swami serves as:
-Co-International Director of Bhaktivedanta College of Education & Culture(BCEC)
- Member of the Board of Directors of Mayapur Institute(MI)
- Member of the GBC Ministry of Educational Development(MED)
- Member of the GBC Succession Committee
- Chairman of ISKCON Leadership Education And Development System(ISKCON LEADS), A GBC Succession Committee Initiative

Bhakti Brhat Bhagavata Swami presently travels widely - preaching and teaching Krishna consciousness in ISKCON centers, yoga centers, schools, colleges and universities.
